This month we interviewed our Systems Engineer, Jack Howells. Jack joined Splice aged just 18 in 2015 and since then has been an integral part of our behind-the-scenes team.
My alarm goes off…
As a night owl I naturally hate getting up, so I’m a big-time snoozer. I always have to shower in the morning because it resets me from the regrets of the night before (laughs).
I’m responsible for…
Overall, engineers are here to make this space ready and working for the creative people to use. Ideally, you never want to notice when I’m doing things; a lot of our work is in the background.
I got my job…
I saw the position advertised on LinkedIn and I applied because I liked the logo (laughs).
Actually, I applied because I was curious to work in the industry because my mum does. She is a producer, so growing up I would spend all my time with her on shoots. It was really fun because she would go to all these events and film sets - apparently, I was on the set of G-String Divas!
My typical day…
Recently, my daily tasks have been regarding the planning of our new Nile Street facility. Specifically planning the network and storage needed, meeting suppliers, and trying to create an action plan for deployment. Last weekend, for example, I went to Amsterdam for IBC to scout for products for our new facility.
The best part of my job…
Having autonomy with responsibility, being able to make big decisions and then execute them is a good feeling.
The worst part of my job…
Sometimes the engineers need to work unexpected hours as often we need the downtime to carry out our work.
After work…
I've started sailing with Jack Moody, who's one of our Senior Edit Assistants here at Splice. We're going to Southhampton in October to a week-long sailing course with hopes to be on a boat for the solar eclipse in Ibiza in 2024. That's the rough idea at the moment.
My Plan B…
I'd try to do something outside of a city because I grew up in suburban NYC, and I don't like the overall routine of the city. It would be cool to make a living in something to do with sailing if it was sustainable.
