My alarm goes off…
I’ve got a 4-year old son Oliver, he tends to sneak into our bed in the early hours of the morning, before my alarm goes off, and then he usually kicks me out (laughs). I normally try to stay in bed as long as I can, but after I'm up it's time to shoot off to work.
I’m responsible for…
For the most part, engineering is just making sure things are working! We are the team behind the scenes making sure everything runs efficiently, our aim is to make sure clients don't even know we're there. If and when there are complications then you want to nip them in the bud as early as you can. When someone's talking about a technical issue, then I feel that we as a team have lost already, because everything should just be working.
I got my job…
One of Splice's post producers, who I had previously worked with in Soho, put me forward for the role. I got a call from Duncan and Damian and here I am. Splice was just a great fit, it made sense for me both on a professional and a personal level.
My typical day…
There is no such thing as a typical day. My phone is always on because it’s not a 9 to 5 kind of job. The work our team do needs to go unnoticed and cause as little disruption as possible. So there are days when we're in before anyone else and days we're here after everyone's left - we don’t have fixed hours - we just make sure we get the work done.
My most memorable work moment…
Got to be this...being interviewed by you right now has got to be the highlight (laughs).
I’m proud of quite a few shows I’ve worked on, especially having been involved with MasterChef, it’s a great series, I watch it and love it, and so does my family. Keeping their kit working is just a small part of the job but it's really satisfying to be involved.
I’ve been at Splice for three years and looking back there is so much that our team has achieved. The company is constantly growing and evolving. We were heavily involved with setting up the Cardiff branch, the infrastructure, the kit, even the furniture! I think every engineer enjoys a good project that they can sink their teeth into. We're busy working on plans for a new London facility, and everything we've learned from Cardiff we'll take with us into that project.
The worst part of my job…
Sometimes it's challenging to find a balance between work and family time, but I guess it’s like that with a lot of jobs. I’m very lucky that my wife has worked in this industry, she really gets it.
The best part of my job…
Is working with the engineering team. We are a small team, but the banter sometimes is hysterical, it just makes your day entertaining. There is a real trust within our team when you ask someone to do something you know it's going to get done. It makes it enjoyable to work with that kind of team.
Weirdly, you get quite an adrenaline rush when you see some kind of fault! When that happens, you just know that everything can escalate very quickly and can impact everyone. I love the challenge of having to find solutions quickly and prevent those issues.
After work…
I try to get home on time to see my son before he goes to bed. I read him bedtime stories, right now, it's Bumblebear - I obviously do it with all the voices (laughs). And after that, I try to spend time with my wife and do my best to not to check my phone all the time!
My Plan B…
When I was in school I was going to join the police. I did my work experience with Gloucestershire Police force and then my family moved to London. I wasn’t old enough to fill in my application after secondary school as I was still 17, so I went to college instead to study engineering and enjoyed it so much, I stuck with it.
